Preservation of the 18th-Century Härjapea Bridge
THE PROBLEM
During the reconstruction of Jõe and Pronksi Streets in the heart of Tallinn in late July, an unexpected discovery was made—an 18th-century historical arch bridge, previously unknown to the public, was found buried underground. This discovery presented several challenges, including the preservation of the bridge’s historical value and ensuring the safety of the traffic route above it. Local authorities and expert teams had to find a solution that would allow for both the protection of the structure and the maintenance of the road’s functionality for vehicles.
WORK PROCESS WITH URETEK TECHNOLOGY
To solve these challenges, local authorities worked with URETEK Baltic team, who used innovative ground engineering technology. Our technical team strengthened the bridge by compacting the soil underneath to make it stable and able to carry heavy weights. Then, URETEK filled the top of the bridge with a special resin to reinforce it and prevent it from collapsing under traffic. The work was finished in 1 day, allowing the reconstruction to continue without delays while preserving the bridge’s historical value.
THE RESULT
The Härjapea Bridge was successfully preserved and became an important part of Tallinn’s history. It now safely supports the road above, allowing traffic to flow smoothly. The project showed how URETEK advanced technology can provide quick, effective solutions for preserving history. This project proved that modern engineering can protect historical sites, leaving a lasting impact on Estonia’s construction industry and raising awareness of URETEK capabilities.
